International Law Firm Association Expands Presence In South-East Europe

September 25, 2008

Fast-growing international association of independent professional firms MSI Global Alliance (MSI) has increased its footprint in South-East Europe's legal market by appointing leading independent law firms Pećarević & Relić in Zagreb, Croatia, and PRO IUS Law Firm in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The appointments enable both firms to remain fully independent, while broadening the scope of services available to their clients through access to a carefully selected worldwide association of over 250 independent law and accounting firms in 100 countries.

With foreign corporations comprising a large share of both firms' client bases, the need to refer clients to other independent, entrepreneurial law firms with strong international corporate teams in other jurisdictions had become increasingly important. With MSI Global Alliance membership not requiring exclusivity, both firms continue to benefit from existing law firm relationships, while enjoying access to an additional source of referrals.

Pećarević & Relić is a 10-lawyer full service law firm established in 1993 that specialises in the following areas of law: corporate and commercial, mergers and acquisitions, foreign investment, and employment. The firm's clients are predominantly foreign corporations active in the country's real estate, retail and construction sectors.

PRO IUS Law Firm was founded in 2000 and has grown to 13 lawyers. The firm's clients include UK companies and a number of NASDAQ listed U.S. corporations, many of which invest in Slovenia's tourism and telecommunications sectors. The firm's areas of practice include: corporate and securities, litigation, banking and finance, bankruptcy, construction, intellectual property, employment, leisure and tourism, real estate, tax, and telecommunications.

MSI membership acknowledges our standing in the Adriatic region and will benefit our clients, other member firms' clients, and our future professional growth.

Tadej Horzen,
Managing Partner of PRO IUS Law Firm.

Sanja Relić, founding partner at Pećarević & Relić comments: "Croatia is experiencing considerable international investment and our appointment highlights our credentials as a tried and tested, high quality law firm that is experienced in providing the full range of legal services to foreign corporations. Our clients also have the reassurance that they can reach out to other law firms that we trust and know will handle their business the same way that we do."

James Mendelssohn, MSI's Chief Executive, says: "It is important that MSI member firms can call on like-minded lawyers throughout South-East Europe who are English speaking and have experience of handling international work. Pećarević & Relić and PRO IUS Law Firm fit this profile exactly. Similar to other growing, strong independents, both firms need more than informal correspondent links to other firms to maximise growth opportunities and better serve clients investing outside of Croatia or Slovenia."

"We continue to look at potential law firm members in surrounding countries Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia. It is important to provide local corporations in these countries and worldwide with access to independent firms that know each other well, understand the complexities of cross-border business, charge reasonable fees, and offer partner involvement in client matters."

"The number of law firms we have been approached by from all over the world over the last few years shows there is a growing trend for independent law firms to look beyond mergers and towards legal associations and networks."

These latest appointments increase MSI's European law firm membership to 50 firms, ensuring entrepreneurial, middle market clients have access to the full range of commercial advisory services across the region. MSI is among the world's most established international accounting networks, accounting associations, legal networks and law associations, and has over 250 member firms in 100 countries.
