Radio France Internationale envisage d'arrêter la diffusion de ses programmes en six langues (allemand, albanais, polonais, serbo-croate, turc et laotien), faute d'audience, un projet qui concerne une cinquantaine de salariés, a-t-on appris lundi de source syndicale.
Ce projet a été présenté vendredi au comité d'entreprise par le président de RFI, Alain de Pouzilhac, et la directrice générale de la radio, Christine Ockrent, a précisé cette source à l'AFP, confirmant une information des Echos.

Google Translate => I prefer the translations well done.
PROMT Translator => I prefer well made translations.
Si la traduction proposée par Google Translate est compréhensible, elle ne *sonne* pas très bien.
En revanche, celle de PROMT Translator est tout à fait correcte.

A best-selling guide to The Book of Kells has been translated into Japanese for the thousands of tourists who visit the ancient manuscript every year.
Exploring the Book of Kells, by historian George Otto Simms, has been reprinted in French and German since first published 20 years ago. Now the guide has been translated from English into Japanese script by Croatian firm SIA Inc and published by O'Brien Press in Dublin.

(Nasdaq: GOOG) has the followed the recent launch of the Hebrew version of its Gmail service with the launch of its new translation service Google Translate, which supports translations of texts to and from 30 languages including Hebrew. The program also aligns paragraphs to the left or right margins of the page depending on the direction of the language.

L'examen passé au printemps dernier par de futurs médecins pour l'obtention d'un permis de pratique souffrait d'une mauvaise traduction...[au point que] les candidats devaient se rabattre sur une copie d'examen en anglais pour comprendre les questions.
Les résidents en médecine du Québec ont été confrontés à des termes imprécis ou erronés et à des questions floues. Ainsi, l'expression past medical history, « antécédents médicaux », a été traduite par « histoire de la maladie actuelle ».
Le mot anglais lumpectomy, qui signifie « retrait d'une tumeur cancéreuse », est devenu « lumpectomie », un mot qui n'existe pas en français. Le terme sensibilité était utilisé comme en anglais « sensibility » qui a le sens de « douleur ». /...

Un moyen rapide de traduire des mots dans plusieurs langues directement depuis le moteur de recherche.
Pour mémoire, une onebox est une boîte de résultats particuliers qui s'affiche parfois entre le champ de saisie et les résultats sur les pages de résultats de Google. La dernière en date concerne Google Traduction, et permet d'avoir accès rapidement à la traduction de certains mots.
Toutefois, vous ne pouvez actuellement traduire que des mots ou des expressions indissociables, cette onebox se base en effet sur le dictionnaire de Google Traduction (récemment mis à jour) et non sur le moteur habituellement capable de traduire des paragraphes entiers.

With all the bad press the Tory government has been getting of late regarding cuts to arts funding, you would think they’d be desperate to point out any new arts investments they’ve made. This doesn’t seem to be the case, though, as a new $5-million program for book translation seems to have escaped the attention of English-language publishers completely, even though it was announced almost two months ago.

THE debate on the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board Bill 2008 was deferred at the committee stage yesterday following a request by Plantation, Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui on the grounds of a technicality.
Chin told the house there were some mistakes in the translation of the two sections from the Malay-to-English versions.
He said the wordings in Sections 12 and 13 of the bill were confusing and could lead to misinterpretation.
Section 12 seeks to provide immunity to government officers acting on behalf of the Board, while Section 13 allows people aggrieved by the decisions of the Board to seek legal redress.

The translator of the late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish's collection The Butterfly's Burden has won the Saif Ghobash-Banipal Prize for literary translation from Arabic.
Fady Joudah, a Palestinian American poet, practising doctor and poetry translator, will be presented with the £2,000 prize on September 29. Darwish died last week after complications following heart surgery in the US.

Canada : 5 millions $ pour une traduction, sans le dire à personne
Le gouvernement conservateur canadien a mauvaise presse depuis quelque temps, avec tout ce qui touche aux diverses réductions du financement dans le secteur des arts. Nous vous en parlions, les tranches faites dans le budget de la culture font frémir la population.
Sauf que dernièrement, un programme de traduction pour un livre, d'un coût de 5 millions $ canadiens, qui a été étrangement passé sous silence durant plus de deux mois, et que l'on découvre aujourd'hui avec étonnement.
Il s'agissait justement du National Translation Program for Book Publishing, qui s'inscrit dans un cadre plus vaste, nommé le Road Mpa for Linguistic Duality. Plus vaste et plutôt coûteux, puisqu'il impliquait de débloquer 1,1 milliard $ pour assurer le bilinguisme dans le pays.
Les 5 millions affectés à la traduction de ce programme doivent se faire en quatre temps. Mais selon l'Association of Canadian Publishers, personne n'était au courant de cette somme ni de ce programme. Seule l'ANEL, Assocation nationale des éditeurs de livres; avait eu connaissance de cette somme de 5 millions...

One of the most perplexing language issues at the Olympic games is how to translate the all-purpose Chinese cheer, “加油!” (jiayou!), into English (or any other language). 加 means to “add.” 油 means “oil” or “fuel.” (And technically gas stations are often called 加油站, or jiayou stops). But it’s almost never chanted in the context of a gas station. Instead, you’ll hear it often chanted at these Olympic games when the audience wants the competitors to dig deep and put in an extra effort. Here is a YouTube video explaining how to chant 加油 to go with the official Olympic civilized chant hand gestures). But around the Web you can find a variety of struggles as the Chinese try to translate this all-purpose cheer into English. (On some chat boards it even makes it into the category of most frequently asked translations.)

The spread of Islam began during the lifetime of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) and gathered phenomenal speed after his death in 632 C.E. By 698 C.E., Iraq, Iran, Syria, Egypt and North Africa became part of the new political and religious order.

With its mind-boggling multi-lingual alphabetization, in the EU countries can simply go missing.
German journalists registering for the French presidency of the European Union in July had an unusual problem: they couldn't find their country.
The registration Web site, drawn up in flawless English, featured a drop-down menu listing 201 countries of origin. There was just one problem: Germany, the EU's largest member, appeared not to be there.
Only a painstaking search revealed the Teuton titan, nestled in the alphabetical list between Algeria and Andorra. The reason: although the Web site was in English, it was based on a French original -- and in French, "Germany" is "Allemagne."
It takes a special kind of organization to make even alphabetical order that complicated.

The news that Russian television executives are on the look-out for a David Brentski of their own to star in their remake of The Office is just the latest in a recent line of mind-bogglingly unlikely makeovers for British television hits abroad. Only last week, Matt Lucas and David Walliams unveiled the new characters who will be spouting catchphrases (and, no doubt, bodily fluids) in the US version of their quintessentially British sketch show, Little Britain USA. And Paul Abbott is currently holed up writing an American version of his Manchester sink-estate comedy Shameless. According to early reports, in what may be the most audacious piece of transatlantic casting yet, its hero, Frank Gallagher, the "greasy streak of alcoholic piss" originally embodied by a lank-haired, snaggle-toothed David Threlfall, will be played by that all-American, tanned, bleached-smiling beacon of teetotal, organic living, Woody Harrelson.

Finally, the title was translated as "Zhong-hua Taipei (中華台北)" in Taipei and "Zhong-guo Taipei (中國台北)" in Beijing. Zhong-hua and Zhong-guo both mean China or Chinese in English, the only difference being "hua" stressing "flower" against the "country" for "guo." Participants in the Olympics from Taiwan call themselves representatives of Zhong-hua Taipei, but are addressed by the Chinese as those from Zhong-guo Taipei. Confusing? My grandfather is an immigrant and a jolly, happy type who stays vibrant by talking with his friends from church or with family members. But because English is not his first language and because he's not as tech-savvy as his grandchildren, he has often found dealing with a typical cell phone difficult. The technology gap, generation gap, and language gap all posed by a typical cell phone's user interface (Nokia in this case) were oftentimes frustrating. After all, who can remember to press UP and * to unlock a phone?

50 best literary translations? Here's how I read it...
The British Translators Association is an animal of a very different breed from its closest American counterpart, the American Literary Translators Association or ALTA. The most useful difference between the two groups, from the working American translator's perspective is that front and centre on the Brits' web page is a suggested minimum rate of remuneration, stated flat out: 80 pounds per thousand words for prose, and 85p per verse for poetry.
This would be illegal here in gun-toting America. In 1991, the American Translators Association (a vast group not limited to literary translation) ceased posting its annual guidelines for translation rates when the Federal Trade Commission began investigating whether such a practice constituted price fixing - a violation of US anti-trust laws. Curiously, as the pound grows and grows against the dollar, the lack of US pricing guidelines has turned out to be a great boon to American translators. When my colleagues ask me what rates they should charge, I send them straight to the British translators' homepage.

Republicans have gone into high dudgeon over Barack Obama’s suggestion at a town hall meeting in Georgia this week that Americans might profitably emulate the European dexterity with language (when it comes to foreign languages, Europeans tend to speak many, while Americans tend to know rien, nada, niente, nichts).
“You know, it’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is ‘merci beaucoup!’” Mr. Obama said, to laughter from the crowd.
